About the Workshop:
This class is inspired by the traditional retablo. Retablos originate from a blend of Indigenous artistry, centuries of Catholic iconography, and Spanish cultural influence. Known as láminas in Mexico, traditional retablos were small paintings on tin, zinc, wood, or copper, often used in home altars to honor Catholic saints.
Participants will explore creative techniques for painting wooden retablos in a modern, illustrative style. While the format is rooted in tradition, pieces created need not adhere to religious motifs. Retablos in this class can be playful, whimsical, and symbolic in other ways that showcase the artist’s unique vision.
Wooden retablo panels will be provided, allowing the focus to remain on painting techniques, pattern creation, and visual storytelling.
