About the Lecture:
Recent reports have identified traces of sixteenth‑century European presence in south‑central and southeastern Arizona. Some assert these traces mark Suya (also called San Gerónimo III), an outpost of the Coronado Expedition. But re‑examination of written records reveals other possibilities.
At least eighteen expeditionary episodes from the sixteenth century could have left these material traces. The small, short‑term occupation of Suya was dwarfed by the passage of the full expeditionary force. Yet current investigations claim multiple sites linked to the minor Suya event—and none tied to the vastly larger expedition or its other subunits. The evidence for Suya remains thin, mostly conjectural, and indistinguishable from other events of the period.
