About the Exhibition:

Strata Gallery presents In The Eyes, an Emerging Member solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based artist Taylor Thomas. The show draws from her grandmothers’ photo archives and the archive of film and television media.

Thomas questions the influence of external representational systems on the Black family. In her paintings, she applies chrome paint to her subjects’ skin—a nod to television static and the ambiguous nature of knowing an “other.”

Her collages explore the relationship between skin and body, interiority and exteriority. She abstracts faces of Black Hollywood figures and family members into pixelated squares.

In film and television, pixilation and static signal moments of disrupted visibility. Thomas uses these tools to encourage viewers to recognize their active participation in perception. She references the parts that make up the whole, and the spaces between legibility and abstraction that might inspire connection.

About the Artist:

Taylor Thomas began her career developing feature films. A lack of diversity in the industry drove her to the visual arts. She earned her MFA from CalArts in 2025. In The Eyes marks her first solo exhibition in New Mexico.
